My self-portrait final sculpture for Space Research class. There was a research component to the project, so I chose to study the techniques and style that Vally Nomidou uses to create her breathtaking pieces. I love that her work gestures to Kiki Smith and classic greek statues, so hopefully I was able to emulate that a little in my piece. I really happy with how it turned out and how it caused me to step out of my comfort zone a little bit in regards to the exposed body and sculpting techniques.
The materials are mostly sectioned plaster casts of my body that were stitched together with wire, wrapped around an armature of chicken fencing, then several applied layers of paper mache.
This is Sarah’s self portrait that she did for VCU. One of the bonuses to being an artistic couple? You get to help your girlfriend cast her face in plaster!
